Edible Brains

Otak-otak is Malaysian barbequed fish paste (or fish mousse as some may call it). The word otak means brain in Malay. This is due to the soft, mousse-like texture of the fish paste resembling..err the brain. I hope you are not grossed out...hahha. This delicious fish paste of mackerel is mixed with spices such as garlic, chillies, lemon grass, shallots, coconut milk and tumeric, wrapped in banana leaves and then placed over the grill. It has been said that the best otak-otak is from the town of Muar in the state of Johor, where they are made from a combination of fish head, cuttlefish and chicken. Modern varieties of the otak-otak are also made with crab and prawn meat. Otak-otak is usually eaten with rice or on its own as a snack.
Wanna try delicious edible brains? Try otak-otak.
Otak-otak was photographed at a night market (pasar malam).

I like otak otak too. When I eat otak otak, the 'bumbu kacang' has to be a lot. :)

I am not a big fan of otak-otak unfortunately. The last time I ate one was when I was pregnant with Raimie. :-(

I agree, nowhere else has better brains (oops! I mean "otak-otak") than Muar's. Have you been to Muar? You must try their o-chian (oyster omelette) too. Yum!

Muar is a coastal fishing town which explains the abundance of fresh seafood available. Here are two posts on my Muar visit - Part 1 and Part 2. Hope you will enjoy the virtual visits.

I've tried Muar otak otak, quite different from Singapore's.

We have quite a variety of otaks in Singapore too.
