Water Girl

Do you drink enough water in a day? I bring a 1.5 litre water bottle to my office each day and on top of that, I drink at least an additional 1-2 more glasses of water before I end the day at work. I know for some people water just doesn’t appeal as it’s plain tasteless. They would rather reach for that glass of soda or a caffeine fix. But our body knows better. Next to breathing, water is the survival essential. Our body needs water to function like how a car needs fuel to move. I have my daily tea fix but I make sure I have my water too. I had sore throat a couple of days ago over the weekend and I downed loads of water and some 100 plus (to curb dehydration). No doctor and no antibiotics. Thankfully, the sore throat went off within two days and I have since recovered completely.

Some fast facts on water function in our body? Water forms the base of saliva in our mouths. This may sound abit eeky but a friend of mine uses saliva to cover small cuts when no antiseptic medication is available and she says it works. Our joints are surrounded by fluid and water, in the form of perspiration helps regulate one’s body temperature. Water helps with metabolism, curb constipation and aids in detoxification and waste elimination.

Drinking sufficient water also helps one maintain clear and beautiful skin…though I have come across people who barely drink up and yet still have porcelain smooth skin. Perhaps it’s in the genes.

Don’t drink enough water? Don’t like tasteless water? Add lemon slices to your drinking glass or water bottle to zest it up. Drink up and don’t substitute what your body needs with carbonated drinks, caffeine or tea.

I drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. If I don't drink water, I will feel lethargic.

That's why I find it really tough to puasa like the Muslims do during ramadan. I mean no food is still tolerable, but no water? Almost impossible for me!

There's another "eeky" use of saliva. When you get mosquito bites, and have nothing on hand to soothe it, just apply your own saliva to the skin area that is bitten. The itchiness will go away by itself.

I used to drink 4 litres of water a da, not sure if it's over working my kidneys or not.

A friend of mine survives w/o plain water. He says plain water is for bathing, not for drinking.

I only drink warm water, otherwise it's Japanese tea all the time. I know I don't drink enough water since I always forget to drink at work. :-(

Foong: Drinking 8 glasses is the way to go :)

Anonymous: Wow..I have a friend who used to drink coke like water..guess some ppl's body kinda get used to not depending on water.

Lina: When I get too busy, I drink less at work too..but I try to remind myself to drink in the midst of busyness.

Good reminder, MBL. Thanks.

You know what I do for a sore throat? I drink (not gargle) brine before I go to bed. The concentration must be as salty as regular soup for it to work. Use warm water, it's easier to stomach. It works for me every time.

Foong, yr tip on mosquito bite is new to me. I must give it a try. Thanks for sharing that.

Wow! Anonymous, 4 litres a day? You know, I read a newspaper article of someone who died from drinking too much water. Apparently, he had so much water in his system that his blood became so thin and subsequently his vital organs malfunctioned. I'm not scaring you, just sharing what I read.

We caught a UK documentary sometime ago. It says drinking 2 litres of plain water or replacing these with other moisture in food (fruits, vegetables, etc) makes no difference.

I try to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. Since I'm pregnant I've noticed that I am much more thirsty anyway. I bought a 1 liter bottle that I carry around with me as a reminder because I have a tendency to just work, work, work and not take care of myself until I'm cranky and dehydrated.

another great reminder you posted here. i do drink a lot of water, especially when hiking, we drink even if we do not feel thirsty before it is too late, since you can get dehydrated without also knowing it.
