Soy Bean Dessert

Soy bean pudding or custard (also known as tau foo fa in Cantonese) is a popular dessert in Malaysia. The main ingredients used in making this dessert are soy beans which is made into a custard consistency (tofu like) and served in a sugary syrup (made from white or brown sugar). I prefer my soy bean custard served with brown sugar as I find it more aromatic. The one featured in this photo is a bowl of wonderfully delicious soy bean custard served at a shop called Funny Mountain in the town of Ipoh. That was one of the nicest soy bean custard I have ever eaten. And I am not kidding...judging from the long queue of people waiting patiently in the hot afternoon. What's your favourite dessert?

It is a small shop at Ipoh. I had been there before.
Seems like you travel very frequently. Cheers.

If anything too sweet I normally can't eat too much. Sweet things repel me, isn't it strange? I like tau fu fa. Used to eat them quite a lot when I was in Msia.

I see you go to Ipoh quite a lot huh? Do you have friends there or something?

I have to agree with you that this is one of the best food in Malaysia. I used to buy this when i was studying in KL. Every time they have pasar malam, i will surely bring back one soy bean. Nyummie. I think i will look for it later in Kuching.

The tau fu fa looks so smooth. Some people like to eat it with soya bean drink. But I don't like that. I also prefer to eat with brown sugar. My favourite dessert? Fa Seng Tong...

There's a popular stall at the junction in Chinatown. It's been there for ages and is supposed to serve THE best tau fu fa in KL. Ever heard of it?

Teehee! I’ve tried many variations of this popular dessert but nothings beats the ones i had in Penang. :)

My bowl of steaming tau fu fah has gotta be with brown sugar syrup too.

Manglish: I have never tried almond flavoured ones before but it does sound interesting :)

Rainfield61: Not really. This photo was taken two months ago on a food trail to Ipoh.

Ai: I can't take overly sweet stuff too. But most soy bean custard's sweetness is all right for me. I don't travel alot to Ipoh. This photo was taken two months back on a food trail to Ipoh. Just day trip of eating and sight seeing.

Lina: It was a good bowl of tau foo fa. Next time you're in Ipoh, go to Funny Mountain.

Willie: Yeah, they're commonly sold in Msian night markets. Some people eat it in soya milk instead of sugary syrup.

Superman: I agree that peanut cream custard (or fa sang wu) is another great dessert but a good one's really hard to find these days. That's my sis' fav dessert.

Happysurfer: I have never tried the one in Chinatown. Thanks for letting me know. Will check it out when I do visit Chinatown one day.

KS: Haha..it's ok. Not everyone likes desserts :)

SK: Yeah, I don't know why the shop's called Funny Mountain. But it's packed with crowds of people queuing up for soy bean custards and soya milk!

LR: Hehe..I haven't tried the ones in Penang so I can't comment but I love Penang asam laksa. Yum...

Pete: Yeah..I agree. Maybe the name helps to make it stand out so people won't forget a Funny Mountain? :)

Betchai: I googled about this dessert and was surprised to find that they have this in the Philippines too! Oh wow...not just a Chinese Asian dessert huh?

Horlic: You're named after the drink? :) Welcome to my blog and thanks for visiting and leaving a comment. Yeah, the brown sugary syrup makes it tastier.

Merryn: Wow...so blessed of you to have a potfull to enjoy! :)

Ladyviral: Happysurfer mentioned there's one in Chinatown. Give it a try? I haven't tasted the one in Chinatown myself.

I am not a huge fan of tau foo fa but I don't mind eating it! But I've heard from somewhere that it is not a very healthy food due to the gypsum powder used in the process of making the tau foo fa.

I eat Soy Bean Dessert at least once a week. haha :D

Tekkaus said...

But not that I enjoy it...but my family does. And when they "da pau" they will always da pau extra for me. Actually I don't like the taste. hahaha :D

my fave dessert is almond jelly but i like this one too, we call it "taho" in the Philippines it's served with caramelized sugar and sago. I prefer to have it hot than cold too, very nice to have in the morning. another dessert i like it sweetened nangka =)

Ben: Yes, there's a good place for cendol along Jonker Street. I can't remember the name though but I was there last Dec. The cendol was really good.

Renaye: Wow..only once. There are loads of other dessers to choose from :)

Coolingstar9: Have a great day too! :)

Foong: You're right. I have heard about gypsum powder being used to give the beancurd the tofu-like consistency.

Tekkaus: Hehe..you don't like but you still eat it coz your family already packed it for you. And extra somemore! Do you like tofu then?

Ayie: I googled and came across the taho which is similar to this with the exception of the added sago. I like my soy bean custard served hot.

this looks like our local "taho". it's usually peddled during the morning. i used to dislike eating it because it's not sweet. however, as the years go by, i became fond of it and would be excited once i hear the peddler shout "taho" around the neighborhood. Our "taho" is a combination of soy bean custard & "sago" pearls mixed with melted brown sugar. I'm craving for it now..hehe

Mei Teng said...

Cynthia: Thanks for the award! :) Are you from Ipoh?

Vialention: Hehe...just a thought that education these days are going up and having children is not easy on the wallet.

Dio'tama: That's right. It looks like the taho. Except we don't have sago in the local soy bean custard.
